AI in Entertainment & Media

What You'll Learn

  • Understand how recommendation algorithms work.
  • Recognize AI-generated content in news and social media.
  • Explore AI tools for creative hobbies.

How Recommendations Work

If you have ever wondered how Netflix always seems to know what you want to watch, or how Spotify finds songs you like, the answer is AI. Recommendation systems work by analyzing two types of data.

Your behavior: What you watch, listen to, click on, how long you spend on each item, and what you skip.

Other people like you: The AI finds people with similar tastes and recommends things they enjoyed that you have not tried yet.

This is called "collaborative filtering," and it is why your Netflix homepage looks completely different from anyone else's. It is also how Amazon recommends products and how YouTube suggests videos.

The Filter Bubble Problem

While recommendations can be helpful, there is a downside: they can create a "filter bubble" where you only see content that matches your existing interests and viewpoints. This is especially concerning with news.

Social media algorithms tend to show you content that keeps you engaged, which often means content that confirms what you already believe or triggers strong emotions.

This can give you a distorted view of the world, where it seems like everyone shares your opinions or that things are more extreme than they really are.

How to counter this: Actively seek out reputable news sources with different editorial perspectives. Be aware that your social media feed is curated by AI, not a neutral reflection of reality.

AI for Creative Hobbies

AI tools have opened up exciting new possibilities for creative expression.

Writing: AI can help you write poetry, short stories, memoirs, or family histories. You provide the ideas and direction; AI helps with the words. It is like having a collaborative writing partner.

Visual art: AI image generators can create artwork from your descriptions. You could describe a scene from your childhood, and AI will create an illustration of it.

Music: AI tools can help you compose simple melodies, create background music for home videos, or explore music theory.

Genealogy: AI can help you research your family history by analyzing records, suggesting connections, and even translating historical documents in other languages.

Try It Yourself

Try one of these: (1) Look at your Netflix or Spotify recommendations and think about why the AI chose those for you. (2) Ask TechMate's AI Chat to help you write a short poem about your favorite memory. (3) If you are interested in genealogy, ask AI to help you get started researching your family tree.
