AI on Your Devices

What You'll Learn

  • Identify AI features already built into your phone and computer.
  • Use accessibility features powered by AI.
  • Set up and use smart home devices effectively.

AI on Your iPhone or iPad

If you use an Apple device running iOS 18 or later, you already have access to Apple Intelligence features.

Writing Tools: In any text field, select text and tap "Writing Tools" to proofread, rewrite, summarize, or change the tone of your message.

Photo Search: In the Photos app, type natural descriptions like "dog on the beach" to find matching photos.

Notification Summaries: Apple can summarize your notifications so you see the key information at a glance instead of reading every individual alert.

Siri Improvements: Siri is becoming better at understanding natural language and can now handle more complex requests.

AI on Your Android Phone

Android phones, especially Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices, offer many AI features.

Circle to Search: Draw a circle around anything on your screen to instantly search for it.

Live Translate: AI can translate phone calls in real time between languages.

Photo Magic Eraser: Tap on unwanted objects in a photo and AI will remove them.

Gemini Assistant: Google's Gemini assistant is built into Android and can help with questions, planning, and writing.

AI-Powered Accessibility Features

AI is making devices more accessible for people with vision, hearing, or mobility challenges.

Text-to-Speech: AI can read any text on your screen aloud in a natural-sounding voice. Both Apple and Android have this built in.

Live Captions: AI can generate real-time captions for any audio playing on your device — phone calls, videos, podcasts, or in-person conversations. Available on most modern smartphones.

Voice Control: If using a mouse or touchscreen is difficult, you can control your entire device using voice commands. AI-powered voice control has become remarkably accurate.

Hearing Aid Integration: Modern hearing aids connect directly to smartphones and use AI to automatically adjust settings based on your environment.

Smart Home AI

Smart Speakers (Alexa, Google Home): These voice-activated devices can answer questions, set timers, play music, make calls, control lights and thermostats, and create shopping lists. They are particularly helpful if using a phone or tablet is difficult.

Smart Thermostats: Devices like the Nest thermostat learn your temperature preferences and adjust automatically.

Smart Doorbells and Cameras: AI-powered doorbell cameras can distinguish between people, packages, animals, and vehicles, sending you relevant alerts.

Fall Detection: Apple Watch and some other wearables use AI to detect if you have fallen and can automatically call emergency services.

Try It Yourself

Explore one AI feature on your own device today. If you have an iPhone, try the photo search feature. If you have a smart speaker, try asking it to set a medication reminder. If you are unsure what features your device has, ask TechMate's AI Chat: "What AI features are available on my [device name]?"
